Heritage Farm

Navajo-Churro sheep at Heritage farm

Located just northeast of the conservatories, you'll find Heritage Farm—a scenic farmland dedicated to connecting guests with New Mexico’s long-standing agricultural history.

Across the farm’s 11 acres, visitors can admire a picturesque vineyard and apple orchard, several heritage breed farm animals, an old-school cider press building, and a rustic farmhouse where guests can observe demonstrations of rug hooking, wood carving, quilting, and more on select days.

After being closed for about two years to undergo extensive enhancements, Heritage Farm reopened to the public in April 2025. The renovations, funded by the 1/8-cent gross receipts tax approved by Albuquerque voters, transformed the farm into a more purposeful, low-maintenance, and environmentally conscious experience.

Among the most striking changes are expanded crop gardens and new perennial beds. Many of the crops grown at the Heritage Farm also serve a practical purpose by supplementing meals for animals throughout the BioPark.

Also new at the farm is a “fairy garden”, which showcases medicinal plants like yarrow and lemongrass surrounded by pollinator-friendly flowers.

Heritage Farm is home to more animal residents as well. New species include Highland cattle, miniature donkeys, Nigerian dwarf goats, and a flock of chickens with four additional breeds that are new to the Farm.

Longtime favorites such as Bugz the painted horse, Navajo-Churro sheep, and turkeys remain part of the farm family. All animals benefit from upgraded care facilities with expanded pastures and enhanced enrichment features.

Guest experience additions include the addition of an outdoor education space for children, paved sidewalks, and additional parking spaces.

A Nature Engagement area, including a mud play pit and rinsing station was also recently introduced for children to enjoy. If visitors plan to engage with this area beyond getting their hands muddy, consider packing an extra change of clothes for after.

The five-acre Cottonwood Gallery can also be accessed through the Farm. Entry to Heritage Farm is included with regular Botanic Garden/Aquarium admission.
