San Antonio Oxbow Extension

Learn about the San Antonio Oxbow Extension (aka Poole Property) adjacent to the West Side Bosque, one of the Open Space Division's newest acquisitions.

Poole Property Acquisition

On March 18, 2021, the City purchased the Poole property for $6.7 million, a 23-acres parcel

While the property was privately owned and the developer was preparing for subdivision construction, the property experienced significant vandalism to the irrigation, walls and other features.  Unfortunately, major tree-die off also occurred due to the lack of irrigation by the immediate former owner.  The Open Space Division is currently cleaning up the area and minimizing hazards, including removing standing dead trees, loose wires, exposed piping, and other debris.  This Fall, the Open Space Division will launch a planning effort for the property, which will include extensive public involvement and input.  Open Space staff will start by offering several tours and listening sessions to solicit ideas about how the property should be opened to the public in order to protect habitat, and support low-impact recreation and education.   In addition, Open Space is recruiting volunteers who want to assist at the site.  See the information below for the upcoming tours, volunteer opportunities and events.
