Welcome to the University Area Command. Our patrol officers are divided into Watch Commands, providing day shift, swing shift, and graveyard coverage for emergency calls for service. In addition to patrol officers, the University Area Command also has a Proactive Response Team (PRT) Officers, who conduct proactive enforcement in crime areas, and conduct community engagement and outreach.
About the University Area
The University Area Command is a diverse and unique area of the city. Home to the two largest hospitals in the city; the University of New Mexico Hospital and the main Presbyterian Hospital. The University Area Command is also home to the University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico College main campus. Neighboring the Albuquerque International Sunport and Kirtland Air force Base, the University Area Command is also home to Nob Hill, a historic shopping and business district. The University Area Command boundaries include San Mateo west to I-25, as well as I-40 South to the city limits. The area command covers approximately 30 square miles, expanding as far south as the Mesa Del Sol community.

Meet the Commander

The University Area Command is overseen by Interim Commander Christopher Schroeder.
Interim Commander Christopher Schroeder serves as the Commander of the University Area Command, bringing more than two decades of law enforcement experience and a proven record of leadership, operational excellence, and community service to the role.
Throughout his career, Interim Commander Schroeder has held leadership roles in Field Services, Tactical, Special Services, and Emergency Management. Before assuming command of the University Area Command, he led the department's Special Services Section, overseeing numerous specialized units, coordinating major special events (focusing on public safety operations), and working alongside local, state, and federal partners during large-scale events and critical incidents.
As Commander of the University Area Command, Interim Commander Schroeder is committed to building trust through visible leadership, accountability, and collaborative problem solving. He believes effective policing is built on trust, integrity, and collaboration, and he is committed to empowering officers to provide exceptional service while developing innovative solutions to public safety challenges.
Interim Commanders leadership philosophy emphasizes developing future leaders, empowering employees, and creating strong partnerships that enhance public safety while strengthening community confidence. Interim Commander Schroeder considers leadership not simply a position of authority, but an opportunity to serve both the community and those entrusted to his command.
