The Watermelon Mountain Jug Band recognized as “one of New Mexico’s treasured natural resources” has been entertaining audiences, young and old, since 1975. True to the original instrumentation of 1920’s jug bands of the South, band members Patrick Houlihan ( vocals, guitar, jug, harmonica, kazoo, jaw harp ), Gary Oleson ( washtub bass ), Ben Perea ( guitar and banjo ), and Barbara Piper

( washboard, vocals, high hat, percussion ) delight audiences with country, bluegrass, jug band, ragtime, popular, Spanish, original music, and even some rock ’n roll. are a musical delight to the ears and the eyes! Our CD, Old Dog New Tricks,” was released in 2004 followed by a second CD released in 2012, “Radio Station WMJB.” The band was also chosen as one of the top 20 jug bands in America for a CD called “Jugs Across America,” has more recently been identified as one of Albuquerque’s 100 most influential people in the 2015 publication Legendary Locals of Albuquerque” and is included in the newly released book “KIMO Theater: Fact and Folklore” (April 2019) about the KIMO Theater in Albuquerque. 48 years of consecutive performing have included appearances at the KIMO Theater, Rio Grande Zoo, Albuquerque Bio Park, Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival, Placitas Artists Series, Old Town Music, ABQ Library Summer Literacy Series, International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and MANY more. The band also plays for national and international conferences, weddings, private parties, local restaurants and pubs, school and community events. “It’s just too much fun to miss!”
