What's Happening at Los Duranes Community Center?

LOS DURANES COMMUNITY CENTER RENOVATION/RECONSTRUCTION UPDATE

 Los Duranes Community Center Entrance

The City established a Building Advisory Committee (BAC) to assist with the planning and design of the Los Duranes Community Center.  The BAC consists of design professionals, project management and community center staff and representatives from the Los Duranes neighborhood.  Neighborhood participation on the BAC ensures the needs of the community are represented in the decision making process for the design of the new center.

At a public meeting on September 17, the City presented schematic designs for the community center and parking lot developed by the architects in conjunction with the BAC. The design options incorporated community input from a survey and the first public meeting within the context of funding, site requirements and other existing or anticipated conditions that might affect the size, design and location of the building and parking lot.

As a result of community input and considerable deliberation by the BAC, the recommendation is for parking on the east and north of the building.

Click here to see the drawings.

Justifications for the parking location include:

  • Interface of the building with the park and its user’s
  • Provides opportunities for any future expansion of the building
  • Provides opportunities to extend the interior spaces to the outdoors
  • Best use of the narrow portion of the site
  • Does not create issues for the majority of adjacent property owners

For the latest updates from the architect please visit the Greer Stafford/SJCF, Inc. webpage at http://greer-stafford.com/COA-home.htm Leaving www.cabq.gov, click for disclaimer

General questions about the project may be directed to Michael Mehling, Community Outreach Planner with the Department of Family & Community Services at 768-2943 or mmehling@cabq.gov.
