New Primates at ABQ BioPark's Zoo

The Rio Grande Zoo welcomes two new primates: a 23-year-old chimpanzee, and a newborn howler monkey.

ABQ BioPark's Zoo is housing two new arrivals: a baby howler monkey, and a 23-year-old chimpanzee.

The chimpanzee, Julie, is a transplant from the zoo in Knoxville, Tenn. She arrived Feb. 2 and is undergoing a monthlong quarantine, which is routine for new arrivals at the Rio Grande Zoo.

Zoo keepers also are making room for the newest howler monkey.

Born Jan. 16, the yet-unnamed infant is still clinging to Fifi, the 14-year-old mother. Newborn howlers usually stay close to their mothers for about a year.

Fifi and her infant are on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily near the zoo's Pheasant Exhibit.
