Description
Join us in celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day and learn about the rich history, culture, and traditions of Indigenous peoples. Many of the beautiful species that call the BioPark home hold special significance for different tribes. Explore Discovery Stations throughout the zoo to learn about the special attributes of each as well as how the effects of climate change are not only affecting these species, but also impacting traditional practices for future generations. Find out what animal attributes YOU encompass according to tribal beliefs and observations, and enjoy traditional story-telling and traditional dance performances. Here are some of the exciting opportunities in store!
Discovery Stations are open from 10 am to 2 pm:
- Bears - Learn about the relationships of the tribes around the world with different species of bear
- Owls & Eagles - Learn the cultural difference between the two and how both can visit the spirit realm, but only one can represent a "bad omen". Discover which!
- Reptiles & Macaws - Find out the reasons why some tribes don’t look at snakes while others showcase them, and read the Apache & Cherokee tale of the Boy and the Rattlesnake. You'll also learn about how the colors of macaw feathers can be interpreted as directions, seasons, and even used in healing practices!
- Wolf & Coyote - Which one symbolizes strength and loyalty and which is seen as a trickster? Discover the difference!
