Sanchez's retirement comes after nearly nine years of leadership overseeing the City's diverse Department of Arts & Culture and its seven divisions. Her work has helped expand access to world-class cultural experiences while strengthening the role of arts and culture as essential to community life in Albuquerque.

Today’s dedication at the Festival Green Pavilion at the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden highlighted her legacy of placemaking, collaboration, and commitment to keeping arts and culture accessible and meaningful to all residents.

“Shelle has spent her career broadening and preserving the cultural fabric of our city and state,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Her leadership has created spaces where people come together, share experiences, and build community.”

Sanchez is a respected arts, culture, and education leader whose career spans more than three decades of public-sector service. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in special education and a B.A. in Spanish and French from the University of New Mexico.

At the City, she oversaw the ABQ BioPark, Public Library, Albuquerque Museum, Balloon Museum, KiMo Theatre, South Broadway Cultural Center, Route 66 Visitor Center, the Public Art and UETF Program, public access media studios and channels, and major citywide events.

Throughout her career Sanchez has held leadership roles across New Mexico’s cultural and educational sectors, including service at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, where she advanced innovative programming and community partnerships that expanded access to arts and learning opportunities. Her work has consistently focused on strengthening collaboration across institutions and ensuring that cultural experiences are available to broad and diverse audiences.

Her legacy includes long-term investments in cultural programming, cross-sector partnerships, and initiatives that highlight the economic, educational, and social value of the creative sector.
