STEAM Night: Route 66 Brings Centennial Celebration to Balloon Museum
STEAM Nights logo is a minimalist design on a black background featuring a cluster of colorful circles and small gear-like shapes in the upper right corner. Below the cluster sits a lowercase gray “m,” creating a simple, modern logo-like composition.

STEAM Night: Route 66 Brings Centennial Celebration to Balloon Museum

A hands-on evening of Route 66 history, creativity, and STEAM exploration for all ages.

July 01, 2026

STEAM Night: Route 66 at the Balloon Museum on July 18 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. honors 100 years of the legendary road through science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Designed for curious minds of all ages, the event blends hands-on learning with cultural storytelling inspired by America’s most iconic highway.

STEAM Night: Route 66 combines interactive fun, local history, and creative expression to highlight the enduring influence of Route 66 on innovation and identity across New Mexico and beyond. Highlights include activities led by R4 Creating, a presentation from New Mexico State Historian Rob Martinez, and a close-up look at the mural Balloons Over Route 66 created by local artist Jessey Sandoval in collaboration with 43 youth artists.

Visitors will also experience the iconic Zozobra hot air balloon (weather permitting), music by DJ Chamar Valdez, and treats for purchase from the Munchie Food Truck.

“Route 66 is a living story of movement, imagination, and connection,” said Balloon Museum Director Nan Masland. “STEAM Night, coupled with the museum’s new mural, shares that story in a way that invites people to discover, create, and celebrate together.”
