Soak in Soulful Sounds on Civic Plaza

A powerful lineup of nationally acclaimed and local talent plays Blues Night on Civic Plaza on Saturday, September 12, from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

New Mexico Jazz Festival convenes Grammy Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Judith Hill along with New Mexico artists Michael Matison and Levi Platero for the free concert, offered as part of the festival’s 20th anniversary.

Hill is known for her powerhouse vocals and genre-spanning artistry, with a career that includes work with music icons Michael Jackson, Prince, and Elton John. She was also featured in the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom and has released acclaimed solo albums including Back in Time; Golden Child; Baby, I’m Hollywood!; and Letters From a Black Widow.

"We are so excited to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the New Mexico Jazz Festival with yet another great night of free music on Civic Plaza. It has been a mainstay of the festival since its inception in 2006 and made possible by the City of Albuquerque’s generosity and partnership," said Tom Guralnick, executive director of Outpost Productions, Inc.

New Mexico’s own Michael Matison brings decades of artistry and soulful energy to Blues Night on Civic Plaza. A longtime presence in the state’s blues scene, Matison earned a New Mexico Music Awards nomination for Best Vocal Performance and performs with The Mothership, a veteran ensemble blending funk, soul, jazz, and blues.

Levi Platero adds his signature sound to the lineup, fusing Texas blues with rock and touches of his Navajo heritage. First emerging with his family band, The Plateros, he has gone on to establish himself as an award-winning solo artist known for electrifying live performances.

“Public spaces become a party when we add good people and great music,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “We love putting Civic Plaza to use for events like this.”
