New History-Focused Mural Dedicated at Wheels Museum

Collaborative project offers collective healing while honoring City’s past and future

December 13, 2025

Today, leaders from the City’s Department of Arts & Culture and Arts Board dedicated a new mural – Brighter Days, Historic Ways – by local artist Ryan Saavedra. The 1,200 square foot mural adorns the southernmost end of the west-facing wall on the Wheels Museum exterior.

This newest mural in Albuquerque’s Public Art collection honors Albuquerque’s rich history of transportation and business, from early trade routes and railroad expansion to Route 66 and modern innovation. A painted collage of historic photographs and landmarks of Albuquerque, it incorporates the first postal office, first tailor shop, KiMo Theatre, Alvarado Station, and hot air balloons.

The mural invites viewers to consider how transportation, business, and people have shaped and continue to shape the City’s identity.

In addition to celebrating Albuquerque, the mural is also a tribute to local resilience and creativity. Saavedra worked with 10 families and multiple volunteers, all of whom have lost loved ones due to violent crimes, to paint the mural. Saavedra and the mural project offered a space and opportunity for healing, empowerment, expression, hope, and connection for everyone involved.

“Though it portrays nothing about gun violence, I wanted to bring in families affected by gun violence to help paint the mural, a big part of healing and therapeutic process,” said lead artist Ryan Saavedra. “It gives them an opportunity to honor their lost loved ones by painting something historic that will be valued and adored not only by the City but also by people who visit Albuquerque from all over the world.”

Saavedra has been a local muralist for nearly three decades, contributing to Albuquerque’s mural legacy and history. This collaborative work honors the City’s past and looks ahead by celebrating its ongoing growth and commitment to a vibrant, inclusive future.

"Art has the power to bring people together, to offer comfort, and to help us make sense of challenging times," said Mayor Tim Keller. "In Albuquerque, creativity is part of how we heal, connect, and strengthen our community."
