Improvements Coming to San Pedro and Erna Fergusson Libraries
Upgrades will preserve aging buildings while increasing safety and comfort.
The San Pedro and Erna Fergusson libraries will temporarily close for improvement and preservation projects.
Upgrades include roof and HVAC repairs for the nearly 60-year-old San Pedro Library, which will begin August 10 after conclusion of the summer reading program, keeping the library open during one of its busiest seasons. Construction is expected to last 120 days, with the branch anticipated to reopen prior to school winter break.
"Libraries are some of our city's most essential places — reading, learning, connecting neighborhoods," said Mayor Tim Keller. "We want to keep them in good shape.”
Similar improvements for Erna Fergusson Library will begin on September 21. Like San Pedro, the timing allows the branch to remain open through the busy summer months.
"Investments like this strengthen our library system and ensure our neighborhood branches remain welcoming community spaces for years to come," said Janet Saiers, Chair of the Library Advisory Board. "I'm proud to partner with the City in supporting this work.”
Both projects are funded through public capital improvement dollars dedicated to maintaining and improving City facilities. Closures are necessary during construction to protect visitors and staff while crews complete the work.
During closure, the public is encouraged to visit other nearby library locations:
- Ernie Pyle Library, 900 Girard SE.
- International District Library, 7601 Central NE.
- Juan Tabo Library, 3407 Juan Tabo NE.
Library cardholders can continue to access the Public Library's digital collection of e-books, audiobooks, streaming media, research databases, and other online resources.
