Heights Summerfest Brings New Orleans Jazz to North Domingo Baca Park

Preservation Hall Jazz Band has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for 5 decades.

June 3, 2022 - The City of Albuquerque's Heights Summerfest heads to North Domingo Baca Park on Saturday, June 11 with national headliner Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The free event will also feature local entertainers, food trucks, an artisan market, and free activities for kids from 5 to 10 p.m.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 50 years, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history. PHJB marches that tradition forward on its album "So It Is." The album redefines what New Orleans music means today by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots, through its common ancestry with the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane, and forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport, including legends like Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, and the Grateful Dead and modern giants like My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, and the Black Keys.

Local performers include:

DK & The Affordables (vintage rock & roll) at 5 p.m.
Felix y Los Gatos (Latin blues) at 6 p.m.
ChillHouse with Hillary Smith (soul) at 7 p.m.

Throughout the evening, concert goers can grab a bite to eat from more than 20 food vendors offering treats ranging from spicy chicken to ice cream. Local breweries, distilleries, and wineries will be onsite with award winning creations in The Cantina, and local businesses and artisans will showcase their handmade products at The Shops. Free activities for kids include face painting, inflatable jump houses, and a 25-foot climbing wall.

North Domingo Baca Park is located at 7521 Carmel NE. Guests are welcome to park in the north lot at North Domingo Baca Park and the Multi-Generational Center. Free parking is available at La Cueva High School with free shuttles taking event-goers from La Cueva High School to North Domingo Baca Park from 4 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Street parking is allowed, however, please abide by all posted parking signs.
