City celebrates the creativity of New Mexico students in new exhibition

October 12, 2026

Emerging Voices: Next Generation of Artists in New Mexico opens at City Hall’s Gallery One on October 13. Curated by members of the New Mexico Art Education Association (NMAEA), Emerging Voices celebrates the creative vision of young artists who represent the diverse cultural, geographic, and artistic voices of our state.

NMAEA and Gallery One will host a public reception at Gallery One on Friday, October 16 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The art exhibition includes 51 juried artworks from students in kindergarten through 12th grade from across the state. While media and styles vary, the exhibition is carefully curated to highlight the expressive diversity of New Mexico’s next generation of artists and to demonstrate the excellence that arises from strong art education programs statewide. These students explore themes of identity, place, community, and imagination, reflecting the vibrant and evolving visual culture of the state’s youth.

“Young people have an important voice in our communities,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Through this exhibition, we get to see New Mexico through their eyes and celebrate the creativity and perspective they bring to our state.”

The pieces were selected by NMAEA from statewide submissions for their visual impact, meaning and expression, composition and organization, demonstration of material process knowledge, and personal skill relevant to grade levels.

“Through Emerging Voices, NMAEA highlights the impact of arts education as a foundational content of learning while celebrating the creative vitality of New Mexico’s youth,” said NMAEA President Liz Olive. “We invite the community to witness the transformative power of art in shaping confident, expressive, and culturally aware young citizens – ensuring that the future of New Mexico’s creative landscape is as bright and diverse as the students who call it home.”

NMAEA is a statewide professional organization dedicated to advancing visual arts, media arts, and design education through advocacy, professional development, and community engagement. Founded in 1974, NMAEA represents hundreds of art educators from every region of New Mexico, from early childhood through higher education, and supports their collective mission to ensure that all students have access to high-quality arts learning experiences.

Emerging Voices will be displayed through December 4. The opening reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. Gallery One hours are 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. Gallery One is located on the first floor of City Hall at 1 Civic Plaza NW.
