City, 516 Arts Share Expanded Vision for New Downtown Art Facility
Public-private partnership triples the space allowing expanded programming and opportunities.
Today Mayor Tim Keller and the Department of Arts & Culture joined 516 Arts to share a milestone in the organization’s long-planned relocation and growth in downtown Albuquerque. Through a public-private partnership with the City of Albuquerque, 516 Arts and the City has transformed a 16,000-square-foot facility at 508 1st Street NW into a new center for contemporary art, education, and community engagement. The project is supported by more than $5.2 million in state capital outlay funding, along with contributions from donors, members, and partners.
For more than 20 years, 516 Arts has served as Albuquerque’s only museum dedicated exclusively to contemporary art. The expanded facility will significantly increase capacity for exhibitions, youth education, artist studios, and public programming, strengthening the city’s cultural infrastructure and expanding access to the arts.
“Projects like this are more than bricks and mortar,” said Mayor Keller. “They are about creating opportunities for people to learn, create, connect, and be inspired.”
Located near the future Rail Trail and adjacent to other downtown cultural destinations, the new space is designed to function as a creative hub where artists, students, and community members can create, learn, and gather. Planned features include expanded exhibition galleries, eight artist studios, collaborative workspaces, youth and family learning areas, and flexible space for performances, talks, and community events.
"The arts play a vital role in New Mexico, and we are honored to take this next step in partnership with the City of Albuquerque," said 516 Arts Executive Director April Chalay. "As 516 Arts celebrates 20 years of connecting people through contemporary art, this inspiring new space gives us the opportunity to support more artists, grow oru programs, and welcome in new audiences while remaining rooted in the values of creativity and community that have guided us from the beginning."
City leaders and project partners emphasized that the expansion reflects years of planning and collaboration and represents a long-term investment in Albuquerque’s creative economy and cultural life. Community engagement remains central to the project, with ongoing input from artists, educators, and cultural workers.
Move-in is anticipated later this summer, with the public grand opening in November. The organization also confirmed that its current location at 516 Central Avenue SW will continue to serve as an arts and culture space.
This expansion marks a significant step forward in expanding access to contemporary art in Albuquerque and strengthening the city’s position as a hub for creativity, education, and cultural exchange.
