Art Exhibition Showcasing Skateboarding Culture Drops In at SBCC

Span of work takes on various stylized images that are a reflection of side walk surfing.

March 24, 2022 - A new exhibition at South Broadway Cultural Center features 50 Albuquerque artists whose work stretches across the vast influences of urban skateboarding culture. Synonymous opens on Thursday, March 31 with an artist reception from 5-7 p.m.

The skateboard deck has played a pivotal role in art and design as it relates to youth culture. Skate culture and its images are influenced by punk rock, hip hop, surfing, and graffiti/street art. There is a strong probability that those who have ever had a skateboard would have labeled it with their own stylized signature.

The span of work featured in Synonymous takes on various stylized images that are reflection of side walk surfing. The public space becomes an impromptu park for skaters. This exhibition is a celebration of that space by including many artists whose work is being exhibited at the South Broadway Cultural Center for the first time.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. Synonymous will be on view through May 14.
