Albuquerque Museum Seeks Museum Guides

The Albuquerque Museum is currently accepting applications for Museum Guides to facilitate learning experiences in the galleries, sculpture garden, in Old Town, Casa San Ysidro, and online. These volunteers will be key partners in the museum’s mission to create an inclusive environment where everyone can be inspired and find connection with art and history. The application period ends July 31, 2023.

Albuquerque Museum is committed to welcoming diverse audiences that are reflective of the community. People from different backgrounds and life experiences are invited to apply to the Museum Guide program. Historically referred to as docents, prospective museum guides should have an interest in learning about art and history, working with audiences of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, and sharing their passion for art and history with the community. No prior experience is required. Anyone with enthusiasm for the power of storytelling is encouraged to apply.

The museum is looking for people with specific knowledge and skills to engage its diverse school population:

• Spanish-speaking guides are invited to enrich the experiences of ESL and Spanish-language students.
• Guides who are skilled in working with different developmental abilities are encouraged to connect with students who have special needs.
• Guides who are from diverse communities are needed to enhance student experiences by sharing their culture and heritage as it relates to the exhibitions on view.

Training for the Museum Guide program is provided in a weekly, one-year, behind-the-scenes program. Training sessions introduce the museum’s collection, provide techniques for engaging visitors, and prepare volunteers to develop and lead introductory tours for adults or school groups.

In addition to being part of a team of museum professionals committed to getting the community engaged in art and history, Museum Guides receive free general admission to the museum and Casa San Ysidro. They also receive a discount in the Museum Store. Additional benefits include service awards, as well as social events including luncheons and field trips throughout the year.
