Albuquerque Museum Presents Focus on Youth

Annual exhibition highlights photographs and films created by APS high school students.

April 11, 2023 - Focus on Youth, an annual exhibition of photographs and films created by high school students from Albuquerque Public Schools, returns to the Albuquerque Museum on Saturday, May 6. This year’s exhibition includes nearly 100 photographs and short films, reflecting mastery across a range of techniques, including silver print, digital and special techniques in photography, artist books, and digital film.

The works in the exhibition are submitted by art teachers to be juried into the show by professional photographers. Juried works are then matted and framed by a team of art teachers and students, before being transported to the museum where the staff design and install the exhibition.

“Albuquerque Museum is honored to provide space to celebrate the work of these young artists,” said Andrew Connors, Albuquerque Museum director. “This annual exhibition has always been a great way to showcase the amazing talent and creativity of these local high school students over the years and provides excellent exposure for their craft.”

The exhibition is part of a multi-decade partnership between Albuquerque Public Schools Fine Arts Department and the Albuquerque Museum to highlight the creativity and insights of youth photographers and filmmakers. Through this partnership, students are provided with a rare opportunity to exhibit their works in a museum.

The exhibition is on view from May 6 to June 4. A reception and awards ceremony takes place on Sunday, May 7, from 1–5 p.m.
