Zoo Music | 6-8:30 p.m. | ABQ BioPark Zoo 

Bring the family to Zoo Music during the summer to enjoy performances by national touring entertainment. Plan to spend an evening with wildlife, food, music and fun. Kids will have fun getting their faces painted. Adults with an ID can order a drink from the variety of bars at the Zoo. Dusk is one of the more active times for animals and a great time to learn about the Zoo’s conservation initiatives. Checkout the variety of animal habitats open during Zoo Music!

Friday, June 6- Johnny Mullenax- Funky Country/ Bluegrass

Johnny Mullenax, a Tulsa native, grew up in a musical family. He started playing the guitar at age 5. In his teens, he followed his family to the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. In typical Johnny fashion, he showed up with just a guitar and ended up sleeping in a stand up bass case. At 18, he used a friend’s ID to get into a club where he was part of a live hip hop band backing rappers. According to Johnny, “Life is too short to play one style of music, and if you have an opportunity to try something different then you should give it a shot.” Claiming wide-ranging influences from AC/DC and The Ramones to John Coltrane and Parliament, Johnny calls his genre-bending sound a funky country bluegrass good time!

Friday, June 20- Jesse Roper- Blues/ Americana 

Jesse Roper is a blues/Americana artist with a penchant for writing modern indie infused blues music and delivering bombastic live performances buoyed by his virtuosic guitar playing. His innate and impressive musical talent has served him well, giving him the flexibility to play with soul icon Booker T. Jones, rock veteran Colin James, blues belter Beth Hart, and Canadian legend Burton Cummings. The stage is where Roper shines. It has been his home since overcoming crippling stage fright during his early twenties. Fear is a part of Roper’s past that barely seems real today - especially when you see the in-concert image of a six-string soldier, hair matted to his face, tearing up the stage, without a hint of second guessing.

Roper’s last album ‘Horizons’ marked a sonic high point in his career thus far. Working closely with famed JUNO-nominated producer Gus van Go (Metric, The Stills, The Beaches, Arkells, Sam Roberts) on that new collection of songs pushed Roper into creating some of his best work.

His newest single "Make It All Work Out" is the first of multiple energetic, fresh, soulful and R&B inspired tracks from a forthcoming LP that harkens the voices of JJ Cale, Leon Bridges, Alabama Shakes - while maintaining Roper's strong and unique expression in the genre.

Adventuresome doesn’t properly describe Roper as an artist, because when the guitar-wielding dynamo sets out to accomplish something, there’s no telling where his mind will wander, or when his energy will go.

Friday, July 11- Zach Person - Indie Rock 

American recording artist, Zach Person, is the new face of indie rock. With his Gibson SG, Person plays loud, raw, and connects with his music fans on a primal level sonically. His brand new sophomore album entitled, “Let’s Get Loud”, (Released March 01) showcases the songwriter's ability to produce a variety of both high energy rock anthems and head-bobbing funk rhythms. Produced by Nashville based rocker, Tyler Bryant, Person describes the album as an audio diary of his mid-twenties, bestowing it the title, “Let’s Get Loud”, as a nod to his musical mantra.

Zach commences his “Let’s Get Loud ‘24 North American Spring Tour” on April 14 and will tour Europe / UK in June of 2024. Stay tuned as Zach will be releasing new music throughout the course of the year.

Event Details

Guests are welcome to bring chairs, coolers and picnics. Glass containers, alcohol, sports equipment, tents and canopies are prohibited. Pets are not allowed at the ABQ BioPark.

All habitats will be open except the Penguin Chill. The penguins have an Antarctic bedtime.
