Sunday on Central Avenue

Come experience the open-air gallery at Civic Plaza!

The Sunday on Central Avenue exhibition, an open-air art exhibit with metal stands featuring portrait photos of people alongside their poetry. As part of Albuquerque’s Route 66 Centennial celebration, the City of Albuquerque Department of Arts & Culture presents the Open Air Gallery experience at Civic Plaza with Sunday on Central Avenue, a public exhibition that explores the people, places, and culture connected to the historic Mother Road.

Installed in the heart of Downtown Albuquerque, the exhibition combines photography and poetry to capture everyday moments, community traditions, roadside culture, and the evolving identity of Route 66 in Albuquerque and throughout New Mexico.

The exhibition features photography by Nathaniel Tetsuro Paolinelli, Jessica Roybal, and Gabriela Campos alongside poetry by Damien Flores and Levi Romero. Together, the artists create a layered portrait of Route 66 through visual storytelling and the written word.

The exhibition complements Centennial Roots, currently on view at the Route 66 Visitor Center, and is part of the City’s broader Route 66 Centennial programming celebrating Albuquerque’s creative community through art, exhibitions, performances, and public events.

Displayed outdoors on Civic Plaza, the Open Air Gallery transforms public space into an accessible cultural experience, inviting residents and visitors alike to engage with stories inspired by Central Avenue and the lasting legacy of Route 66.
