Let’s Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!
Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to honor Albuquerque’s unique cultural tapestry and contributions.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Today, as Albuquerque marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, City Council Vice President Klarissa J. Peña encourages all Burqueños to take time to reflect on and celebrate the deep cultural connections that make our city—and our state—truly unique.
Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to honor the contributions, cultures, and traditions of Hispanic Americans, holds a special significance in New Mexico. Our state's history is inextricably linked with Spanish and Mexican heritage, creating a vibrant, multicultural identity that defines us. From our food and music to our language and traditions, the Hispanic influence is woven into the very fabric of life in Albuquerque.
"As we kick off this month of recognition, I want to invite every single person in Albuquerque to remember and celebrate our shared heritage," said City Council Vice President Klarissa J. Peña. "Albuquerque is built on a foundation of diverse cultures, and our unique blend of traditions—Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo—remains our greatest strength. This month is a perfect opportunity to honor our ancestors and the rich legacy they passed down to us, a legacy of resilience, community, and faith."
Vice President Peña, who represents District 3 on the Southwest side of Albuquerque, highlighted the importance of preserving and passing on these cultural traditions to future generations. "Our chile, our festivals, our art—these are not just things we do; they are expressions of who we are. They are the stories of our families, the echoes of our past, and the vibrant threads that connect us all. Let's make a point this month to visit a local Hispanic-owned business, share a traditional meal with family, or learn a new piece of our history. By doing so, we strengthen the bonds that make us Burqueños."
Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15 each year. During this time, communities across the nation celebrate the history, culture, and influence of Hispanic Americans.
