Mission

The African American Advisory Board is a permanent body established by City Ordinance to ensure the voices, experiences, and aspirations of Albuquerque’s Black community are integrated into the heart of the City’s government. As a strategic partner to the City Council and the Mayor’s office, the AAAB will inform and drive policy changes focused on a more equitable and inclusive future for all residents.

Purpose & Duties

The African American Advisory Board is tasked with advising the City on five critical pillars:

  1. Economic Mobility: Enhancing workforce development, entrepreneurship, and wealth-building.
  2. Missing and Murdered Black Family: Developing prevention strategies and providing advocacy for families impacted by violence and unresolved cases.
  3. Health Outcomes: Addressing disparities in maternal/infant health, mental health, and access to culturally competent care.
  4. Cultural Heritage: Preserving and promoting the traditions and artistic expressions of the African diaspora.
  5. Civic Engagement: Protecting voting access and ensuring representation in policy-making and redistricting.

Board Leadership & Structure

The board membership is guided by ordinance and comprised of dedicated community members and experts appointed to represent the diverse perspectives of our City.

  • Council Liaison: Working closely with representatives from districts with significant historical and cultural ties to the Black community.
  • Collaboration: AAAB partners with the Mayor’s Administration  and City departments to implement data-driven solutions for the City.
