Summer Starts With a Story: Register for the Public Library’s Free Summer Reading Program
Readers of all ages are encouraged to join in the 2025 Summer Reading Program hosted by the Public Library of Albuquerque-Bernalillo County. This is a free opportunity for the whole community to enjoy books and hands-on activities, and use their imaginations all summer long. Online registration opens May 9 at abqlibrary.org/summerreading, and the program runs from May 31 to July 26.
This year’s theme, Color Our World, highlights the ways reading can brighten minds, encourage creativity, and bring families closer together.
“When reading stops over the summer, skills can slip — sometimes setting students back months,” said Public Library Director Kate Alderete. “The Summer Reading Program helps keep minds growing with every story and every page.”
Throughout the summer, families can explore new stories together, take part in interactive programs, and celebrate the joy of learning through reading, music, crafts, and community events.
“Reading as a family strengthens bonds, encourages conversation, and opens minds,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The Summer Reading Program helps families grow together through the power of stories.”
The Summer Reading Program kicks off May 31 with events at library branches citywide, featuring performances, games, and hands-on fun for readers of every age. Program highlights include visits from local authors and artists, creative workshops, fun prizes and plenty of chances to explore the world through books.
The Summer Reading Program is made possible by support from the Friends of the Public Library and generous community sponsors. Find more information and registration details at abqlibrary.org/summerreading.
