Powerful and strong, Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris tigris) are renowned for their hunting abilities. Their black and orange coats serve as camouflage as tigers lie in wait for their meals. When buffalo, deer, wild pigs or other prey come near, tigers will quickly leap and deliver a fatal blow.

Despite their reputation as dangerous maneaters, tigers are actually quite cautious of humans and for good reason. Due to increasing human populations, much tiger habitat in native India has been lost. Poaching for trophies and folk medicine also threatens the species.

Learn more about Bengal tigers and other species in BioPark Beginnings, a preschool program. This winter and spring, explore Asia at the Zoo, Botanic Garden, Tingley Beach and Aquarium.
