Cheep, Cheep, Hooray! Meet ABQ BioPark's New Cape Vulture Chick
Cape vulture Iman, 27 years old, became a third-time mother, successfully hatching a chick with her current mate Hendrix, making the 6-year-old male a first-time father.
Both parents have worked together to incubate and care for the chick in their habitat, and Hendrix is doing an amazing job alongside his experienced partner! Guests will soon get a better look at their bundle of joy as it grows larger and begins to explore outside of the nest soon.
In order to support proper bonding and natural instincts, the bird care team has observed the healthy chick from a distance and won't get a closer look to determine the sex of the chick for a while.
Cape vultures are native to South Africa, where their numbers are decreasing. They are listed as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, and are extinct in some parts of their historical range. Every chick is important to conservation efforts, and we are excited to see the BioPark family grow.
