It is with heavy hearts that the ABQ BioPark shares the passing of Makaio, an eight-year-old white-cheeked gibbon. Makaio arrived at the BioPark in April 2024 and quickly became a cherished member of our animal family. He was discovered in his habitat by his dedicated animal care team early Thursday morning.

At this time, the cause of Makaio’s passing is unknown. The BioPark is currently awaiting results from a histopathology examination and additional testing to better understand what happened. We will share more information as it becomes available.

White-cheeked gibbons are a Critically Endangered species, facing grave threats in the wild including habitat loss, illegal hunting, and the pet trade.

Makaio was known for his confidence and curious nature. His presence brought joy to staff and guests alike, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and cared for him.
