Three days of music open a season of regional and national performers
June 10, 2014
The ABQ BioPark kicks off a summer of great music with three concerts this week. Summer Nights starts Thursday with New Mexico's own Nostoros. On Friday, a grand piano takes center stage for Zoo Music's first performer—Marc Cohn. And on Sunday, the Zoo hosts Radio Lobo Father's Day Fiesta.
"It's a weekend of varied music, from rock to Hispanic to folk. It's all over the map and there's something for everyone," says Maryann Torrez, ABQ BioPark Events Manager. "It's always fun to start the season with local groups—both Nosotros and Mariachi Mystery Tour are from the area. And it's exciting to have nationally recognized performers like Marc Cohn and Little Joe y la Familia."
On Thursday, June 12, Nosotros inaugurates the 2014 Summer Nights concert series at the Botanic Garden. The band has their roots in Las Cruces, where they began as a guitar trio in 1994. In the two decades since, they have grown to their current 9-member ensemble and added percussion and jazz instruments to their unique Latin fusion sound. Since 2001, they've been based in the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area and been met with regional acclaim.
The next night, June 13, Grammy-award winning musician Marc Cohn opens the Zoo Music concert series. Cohn's depth of storytelling has been a marker of his music throughout his career, from his roots in Cleveland, Ohio to his most recent album, Listening Booth: 1970, where he reimagines some of the powerful music of the decade. The BioPark is pleased to welcome Cohn back to Albuquerque during his summer U.S. tour.
On Sunday, June 15 at the Zoo, we celebrate dads with our 15th Annual Father's Day concert, presented by Radio Lobo and MetroPCS. From noon - 5 p.m., three Latin bands take the stage. Albuquerque's own Mariachi Mystery Tour brings the tunes of The Beatles to life with a mariachi flair at noon, followed by Houston-based Grupo Control's southwestern take on Colombian Cumbia. At 3 p.m. Little Joe y la Familia wrap up the afternoon with some of the hottest Tex-Mex music in the industry.
Father's Day events are included with regular admission.
Summer Nights and Zoo Music concerts tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the gate. Prices are: $10 adults; $5 seniors (65+); $3 children (3-12); Children 2 and younger are free. Tickets for BioPark members are half-price.
