Sunday, May 28, 2023

ALBUQUERQUE – APD homicide detectives arrested Carlos Gonzalez today for the overnight shooting death of his girlfriend, 18-year-old Areli Rodriguez. Gonzalez also shot a second victim, who survived his injuries.

Gonzalez, 24, is charged with 2nd degree murder in what he called an accidental shooting shortly after midnight at 920 Louisiana Blvd., S.E. But detectives determined Gonzalez exited his apartment with the loaded firearm in a firing position, causing others to fear for their lives and attempt to wrestle the gun away. He then pressed the trigger during the struggle, striking one victim and causing the death of Rodriguez.

Detectives learned that Gonzalez and Rodriguez were in an argument at a relative’s baby shower Saturday that continued later in the night when Rodriguez was driven home by her sister, Genesis Rodriguez and her boyfriend. Gonzalez and Rodriguez argued inside the residence as Genesis Rodriguez waited outside. Gonzalez opened the door, and Genesis Rodriguez pulled a handgun out of her purse. Carlos Gonzalez also produced a handgun. But Rodriguez dropped her gun as Gonzalez pushed the two women outside the residence.

The two sisters and Genesis Rodriguez’s boyfriend banged on the door, demanding that Gonzalez give her gun back. Gonzalez opened the door, pointed the gun at the three people. Gonzalez recalls firing one shot during a struggle. Both Areli Rodriguez and the second victim were struck by gunfire. Areli Rodriguez died at the scene and the other victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his wound.

Gonzalez is charged with 2nd degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
