ALBUQUERQUE – APD officers arrested Pablo Abreu-Peña today on a felony drug warrant. Abreu-Peña is the suspect who fled from police on Thursday during an incident that resulted in an officer-involved shooting.

Officers detained Abreu-Peña early Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, after they spotted him spray-painting the wheel of a Kia vehicle that did not have a license plate displayed. As they conducted an investigation to determine whether the car was stolen, Abreu-Peña fled from officers. He produced a handgun during the pursuit and shots were fired. One officer fired several rounds, although it is unclear whether Abreu-Peña was struck. The officers were not injured.

Abreu-Peña jumped a fence near the apartment, located at 301 Rhode Island St., S.E., and fled on foot. Police set up a perimeter, but Abreu-Peña was not located.

Police identified Abreu-Peña, 34, a native of Havana, Cuba, as the suspect and started a search for him shortly after the shooting. Detectives tracked him down today at 441 Grove St., S.E.

The Multi-Agency Task force is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
