Therapeutic Recreation programs are fully inclusive, and are offered throughout the city for persons with and without disabilities, age 6 through high school, and some adult programs.

Therapeutic Recreation offers a variety of services that include art, leisure education, performing arts, gross motor activities, and games.

The Loma Linda Community Center houses the administrative offices for the Therapeutic Recreation program. The dates and times of programs will vary with each program.

Before and After School Program (School Year)

Program Availability

These programs are available only at the schools listed below. Before and after school hours are 7 am until classes begin, and from school dismissal until 6 p.m. Children kindergarten through 5th grades are eligible, including students in Special Education.

Loma Linda Community Center is an After School program only, and serves students from any APS school. Loma Linda Community Center serves k-12. Transportation provided from Lowell Elementary School only.

Recreation Program Dates

The program will begin the first day of school and continue through the last day of school. Check with the school to verify the date classes begin and end. Each program follows the Albuquerque Public School schedule, which means when the school is closed the program will be closed.

Please check with your child’s school for a schedule of in-service days, as well as APS holidays.

Registration Date, Time &Place

Registration is usually held on the school campus prior to the first day of classes, during new student registration. Registration is limited and is held on a first come, first serve basis.

If you are unable to register on the registration day, you will still be allowed to register your child in the program any time during the regular program hours, provided there is still space available for additional participants. If there is no space available, you can put your child’s name on a waiting list.

Children with disabilities will be given priority.

A completed registration form is required on any and all children that attend this program.

For safety reasons, if there is not a registration form for a child, they will not be allowed to participate in the program.


Special Event Fee
To enroll children there is a one time Special Event Fee of $30.00 per child to pay for any field trips & special activities that take place on site. Make Special Events Fee checks payable to ATRS (Advocates for Therapeutic Recreation Services).
There is a one-time Program Registration Fee of $10.00. Checks payable to City of Albuquerque.

Fees for Extended Recreation 
Each family is required to pay for extended recreation on a weekly basis. Payments must be made in advance. Shown below are the regular rates. There are no longer free or reduced rates. If you have any questions, please call 7 64-1525.

Recreation Access Program

Therapeutic Recreation Programs provide recreation programming support at Community Center after school programs. We will take referrals for participants with disabilities who would like to attend City recreation programs.

Eligibility Criteria:

All above registration requirements apply in addition to the following criteria:

  • Ages: children in Kindergarten through age 14
  • Willing to attend a Community Center program
  • Adherence to all Community Center rules

2018 Summer Program Information

Therapeutic Recreation offers Summer Recreation Program every year to children in school from 6 years old through high school. Sites include Loma Linda Community Center (ages 6-12), Barelas Community Center (teen site), Mesa Verde (ages 6-12), and McCollum Elementary School (ages 6-12).

2018 Therapeutic Recreation Summer Program Dates

The 2018 program dates for Therapeutic Recreation program begins Monday, June 11, and ends Friday, July 27, 2018.

2018 Registration Information

  • McCollum Elementary School
    • Tuesday, May 15 from 3 p.m.- 6 p.m.
    • Register at McCollum Elementary School (10900 San Jacinto NE) inside the cafeteria.
  • Mesa Verde Community Center
    • Wednesday, May 16 from 3 p.m.- 6 p.m.
    • Register at Mark Twain Elementary School (6316 Constitution NE) inside the cafeteria.
  • All Site Registrations
    • Thursday, May 17 from 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m
    • Register at Loma Linda Community Center (1700 Yale SE)

Registration is on a first come first serve basis. You may also register your child in the program at any time during regular program hours after May 18, provided there is space available.

Once a site registration is full, a waiting list will be kept and maintained.

Parents will be notified as space becomes available. A completed registration form is required for all children that attend the program. For safety reasons, if we do not have a registration form, the child will not be allowed to attend this program.

Program Hours

  • Regular Summer Recreation program hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Extended Summer Recreation program hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Program Fees

There is no charge to attend this program during regular hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday. However, there is a $10 registration fee and a Special Event fee of $30 required for each participant to cover the cost of field trips, special events and swimming. There is a charge for the extended summer recreation program. Please see the chart below for the weekly fee.
