"Juneteenth" is a celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. It is observed annually on June 19th, marking the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people in the state were free. This news came over two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, which formally declared enslaved people in Confederate states to be free.
As a celebration, Juneteenth holds deep significance for African Americans and is increasingly recognized as a "second Independence Day" for the nation.
