Construction Starts to Beautify the Medians on West Central

City Council President Klarissa Peña and District 1 City Councilor Ken Sanchez lead the effort to make West Central a beautiful destination.

City Council President Klarissa Peña, the Office of Councilor Ken Sanchez, and the Department of Municipal Development broke ground on new median landscaping on West Central Avenue from Unser Boulevard to 106th Street on Monday, December 9, 2019.

This new landscaping is being constructed by local company Lee Landscapes Inc. and is adding to the beauty of West Central.  The landscaping will include native rock in a southwestern design. Native plants will adorn the medians and be watered by dedicated irrigation lines to ensure no wasted water. This landscaping will accompany the development growth in the area and DMD will add bicycle lanes and a walking trail in the near future.

“We’re excited to continue the beautification of West Central all the way up to 106th Street,” said Councilor Peña. “Neighborhood representatives were involved in the landscape design and selected the different plant materials for the medians.”

“Over 100 new trees and nearly 500 shrubs will be planted in the medians, continuing our efforts to plant more trees throughout the City,” said Councilor Sanchez. “We’d like to thank the Department of Munipal Development for their outstanding work on this project.”

Department of Municpal Development Director Pat Montoya said, “DMD is appreciative of the leadership of Councilor Peña and Councilor Sanchez to help make this up and coming neighborhood better for everyone. This part of Central Avenue is growing and we are happy to make sure their vision comes to a reality.”

The West Central median landscaping project is funded with $1 million in federal funding and will be completed in June of 2020.
