New Pickup Location in the Southeast Gives People Experiencing Homelessness Better Access to Westside Emergency Housing Center

First stop in International District for the City’s homeless shelter shuttle

August 12, 2019

Mayor Tim Keller, the Department of Family and Community Services, and the nonprofit organization God’s Warehouse announced today that an additional shuttle stop for the Westside Emergency Housing Center has been added to the current list of drop off and pick up locations. It is the first shuttle stop located in the Southeast, giving people experiencing homelessness better access to the shelter.

In addition to providing a food pantry, soup kitchen and a clothing bank, God’s Warehouse will use their location as a pick up and drop off location for the Westside Emergency Housing Center. Men, women, and families can utilize the free shuttle to the Westside Emergency Housing Center.

“For the first time, we’ll offer a daily shuttle from the International District to the emergency shelter on the west side,” stated Mayor Tim Keller. “We’re grateful to God’s Warehouse for stepping up and partnering on our efforts to reduce barriers to compassionate care. It also speaks to the lengths people experiencing homelessness have to go to receive services. That’s why we’re encouraging folks to support a 24/7 centralized homeless shelter with services under one roof.”

“Individuals experiencing homelessness often times do not have transportation options,” stated Pastor Chuck Aragon “By adding this new location people in the Southeast portion of Albuquerque now have direct access to a warm bed and a safe environment for the night. We’re honored to be able to serve the community in this important way.”

Beginning this year, we are keeping the Westside Emergency Housing Center open year-round and so far we have seen a steady use of the shelter, even during the summer. On average, we are seeing about 300 people in the shelter each night.
