Drive Safe, Ride Safe
Transit safety tips for bus riders and local drivers.
At ABQ RIDE, safety takes the front seat. Our Drive Safe, Ride Safe campaign launched in 2026 reflects a systemwide commitment to protecting riders, drivers, pedestrians, and everyone who shares Albuquerque’s streets.
Our staff is driven by transparency, communication, training, accountability, recognition, empowerment, and monitoring. This culture of safety starts with our team and extends onto the streets and to every bus, route, bus stop, and transit center. A safe transit system is a shared responsibility. When staff, riders, and drivers work together, we create a safer experience for everyone.
“Safety issues as seemingly basic as slips, trips, and falls matter to us. We want staff, riders, and drivers alike take ownership of their safety and the safety of others as it relates to the transit system – whether it’s riding the bus, driving near ART lanes, or reporting issues at bus stops. It needs to be a One Albuquerque effort,” said Transit Director Leslie Keener.
If you see an ABQ RIDE Ambassador wearing neon green, feel free to ask them safety questions or for any information about the transit system.
Use marked crosswalks / HAWK signals.
Plan your ride on the Transit app to minimize wait times in extreme hot or cold temperatures.
Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings.
Familiarize yourself with the See Say app for real-time reporting if there’s trash at the bus stop or any safety concerns. Bonus: Compliment your driver via the app by noting their name, bus number, or time you took a specific route!
Watch where you step.
Be sure to look at signage on the floor, bars and seats, and take special note of anything bright yellow which means caution.
Hold on! Maintain three points of contact (two feet + one hand).
Be prepared for sudden stops and allow the bus to stop completely before moving toward the exit.
Keep aisles clear by maintaining control of and securing your belongings.
Stay in your lane!
When driving on Central:
“BUS ONLY” means no cars.
Make left turns and U-turns only at traffic lights.
Crossing double lines or driving into the red lanes means fines.
Only buses, emergency vehicles, and ART maintenance vehicles may use ART lanes (painted red).
Anticipate wide turns and never try to squeeze past a turning bus.
Be patient, as buses travel at safe speeds and stop frequently.
Safety starts with all of us. Together, we can keep Albuquerque moving smoothly!
