Suspect in Albuquerque murder is shot by police in Arizona

ALBUQUERQUE – Police in Arizona were involved in a shooting on Sunday as they pursued a suspect in this weekend’s murder in Albuquerque.

 

The suspect, Kevin McKinney, was shot and transported to a local hospital in Arizona for treatment. Officers involved in the shooting were not injured.

 

APD homicide detectives identified the suspect from Saturday’s fatal shooting in Uptown Albuquerque and notified law enforcement in Arizona that he may be headed to Mesa, AZ. Officers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety and U.S. Marshals Service tracked down McKinney and were preparing to detain him when the officer-involved shooting occurred.

 

McKinney, 36, is accused of murdering a man in Albuquerque on Saturday around 4 a.m. after a dispute related to an attempted firearm purchase. McKinney allegedly shot victim in the area of 6250 Indian School Rd., N.E. Detectives learned McKinney was engaged in a multi-state crime spree in which he stole a gun during a burglary that was later used to kill the victim.
