APD releases update on weekend homicide

Monday, Dec. 19, 2022

ALBUQUERQUE – APD released the identity of the shooting victim who died while attending a party on Albuquerque’s West Side over the weekend.

The victim is Jada Gonzales, 18, who was a student at Albuquerque Academy. APD leaders and victim advocates have been in touch with Gonzales’s family and the leadership at Academy.

APD is asking for anyone who may have video from this tragic incident to share it with investigators at this evidence submission portal.

Homicide detectives have determined there were at least two shooters who fired guns shortly before 1 a.m. on Dec. 18, during a party being held at a home located at 5205 La Bajada Rd., N.W. Gonzales, who was inside the home, was struck by one round. She later died at a hospital as a result of her injury.

“This investigation is very complex due to the number of people who were at the party and several factors that detectives are scrutinizing,” APD Chief Harold Medina said. “But we do know that this shooting stemmed from a house party with alcohol, uninvited and underage guests and the presence of firearms. That is a deadly mix that often leads to tragedy.

“I am truly saddened by the senseless death of a promising young member of our community with great hopes and aspirations.”
