APD releases identity of man who took his life during confrontation with police

July 8, 2022

ALBUQUERQUE – APD identified the man who fatally shot himself during a confrontation with police on Tuesday, July 5, 2022.

The man was identified as James Langlois (10/8/1957.) Preliminary autopsy results confirm that Langlois shot himself in the head.

Officers responded to a call from a manager at Target, located at 11120 Lomas Blvd., N.E., Tuesday night about a suspicious person who was in a van that would not leave the parking lot. As officers approached the van, the man inside the van, later identified as Langlois, brandished a firearm. As officers retreated to their vehicles, they heard a gunshot. One officer shot at the van in response to the gunshot. Tactical officers later determined Langlois was deceased from what was confirmed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The autopsy confirmed that conclusion.

Over the next several months, APD will continue to investigate and analyze this incident. Detectives will continue interviewing any new witnesses that come forward and complete any forensic tests. After the investigation is complete, APD’s Force Review Board will forward the findings to the Superintendent of Police Reform to determine if this incident met the high standards of the Albuquerque Police Department. The Multi-Agency Task Force will forward its case to the District Attorney’s Office to make any determination of criminal charges.
