ALBUQUERQUE – On September 2, 2021 shortly before 12:30p.m. Northeast field officers were dispatched to a shooting call located outside the Christ Lutheran School at 7701 Candelaria Road N.E. The initial call came in that shots had been fired and that students were seen running from the area.

Once the scene was secure and deemed safe, detectives with the Gun Violence Reduction Unit began their investigation. Through the investigation it was determined there were two shooters and that a previous fight had continued to grow which led to the incident.

According to witnesses, the fight started over an unknown issue, but they did know that a student from another high school stated he was coming to Sandia to fight the Sandia student, identified as Steven Robles.

Detectives were able to see that Robles walked out of Sandia High School, down a walk way and separates from a group. He is then seen again walking into the parking lot of the Christ Lutheran School firing shots at a Blue Ford Focus hatchback.

The teen is then seen limping away from the parking lot and jumping over a fence to which he is then picked up in a Red Chevy Malibu. Robles was later dropped off at UNMH hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. After interviewing numerous witnesses and students with second hand information, the subject in the blue Ford Focus was identified.

None of the witnesses saw the second individual actually shooting a firearm and detectives are still actively trying to locate that person for an interview.

Robles was interviewed at UNMH and stated that someone pointed a gun at him so he pulled out his firearm and fired in self-defense. He invoked his rights and refused to speak with detectives any further. Robles was detained and an arrest warrant was obtained for bringing a firearm onto school premises. Once released from the hospital he will be booked into jail.

A relative of Robles was contacted and confirmed they knew Steven owned a gun and carried it all the time. When asked where Steven obtain the gun, the family member stated they did not know.

This remains an active investigation and more details will be released as they are available.
