APD provides update on fatal crash
October 21, 2021
ALBUQUERQUE – On Thursday October 21st 2021, at approximately 4:26a.m., a two vehicle fatal crash occurred at the intersection of Avenida Cesar Chavez and the southbound Interstate 25 off-ramp. A white 2012 Hyundai passenger vehicle was traveling westbound on Avenida Cesar Chavez and was going through the intersection on a green traffic signal.
A silver 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling southbound on Interstate 25 and was exiting the interstate at Avenida Cesar Chavez at a high rate of speed. The unknown male driver ran the red traffic signal striking the Hyundai and causing the Chevrolet to roll and the driver was ejected. The male driver of the Chevrolet sustained life threatening injuries as a result of the crash and died on scene.
The driver of the Hyundai was transported to UNMH with non-life threatening injuries. Speed was a factor on the part of the Chevrolet driver but it is unknown if alcohol was a factor. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor for the driver of the Hyundai. Both vehicles sustained heavy disabling damage and were towed from the scene. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
