Monday, December 13, 2021
ALBUQUERQUE - A fatal crash involving an off-highway vehicle and pedestrian occurred at the intersection of Central Ave NW and Tingley Dr. A family of four pedestrians was walking southbound across Central Ave after leaving the Parade of Lights and was walking to Tingley beach where their vehicle was parked.
A gray or dark colored off-highway vehicle was traveling westbound on Central Ave at a high rate of speed and ran the red traffic signal. The OHV struck two of the pedestrians that were walking in the crosswalk. Video evidence showed that at the time of the crash the pedestrians were crossing the intersection in the crosswalk and the pedestrian crossing signal was illuminated allowing them the right of way. After the collision the OHV continued westbound on Central Ave without stopping and fled the scene.
A 7-year-old male child that was struck sustained life threatening injuries and died on scene. An adult male was also struck and was transported to UNMH where he is in stable condition. Speed appears to be a factor on the part of the OHV and it is unknown if alcohol is a factor for the unknown driver of the OHV. The OHV and the driver have not been located or identified at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
