APD Continues Largest Officer Hiring Push in a Generation
736 officers hired during Keller Administration, 10 cadets in current class from out of state.
APD will soon graduate the latest class of new police officers hired by the department, marking 40 classes during Mayor Tim Keller’s two terms in office. A class of 25 officers will graduate a week from Tuesday, bringing the total number of officers hired this year to 99.
In all, 736 new officers have been hired since Mayor Keller took office in December 2017. That compares to 381 officers hired during the eight years (2009-2017) under the prior administration.
“This milestone shows how far we’ve come in rebuilding the size and strength of our police department,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “We’ve invested in competitive pay, better training, and a culture that values service. As a result, more recruits are choosing APD and more veteran officers are choosing to stay. These officers are stepping up to serve at a critical moment for public safety in Albuquerque, and we’re proud to welcome them to the force.”
This morning the cadets took part in the Chief’s Run, a tradition that signifies the cadets transition from training to becoming a police officer. 10 cadets in the current class came from out of state to join APD, proof that our recruiting efforts are now resonating well beyond New Mexico’s borders.
“Our newest officers are joining APD at a time when the department is seeing real gains in stability and performance,” said APD Chief Harold Medina. “Every academy class represents new energy, new skills, and a deeper commitment to keeping our city safe. We are grateful for these recruits who are choosing a tough but rewarding career and helping us build a stronger, more community-focused department.”
