ALBUQUERQUE – APD officers charged 18-year-old Abraham Corral Alvarez with three counts of DWI resulting in great bodily harm for his role in an overnight street racing crash that resulted in critical injuries to bystanders at a food truck on Central Ave.

According to witnesses, three vehicles were engaged in street racing late Saturday on West Central. One of the vehicles struck the divider along the ART bus lane, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and strike pedestrians who were at a food truck parked on the north side of Central just west of 47th Street.

Four pedestrians were injured. Three of those victims were transported to a local hospital. Two are currently in critical condition and the third is considered stable.

BCSO deputies detained Corral Alvarez, the driver of the black Chrysler that struck the pedestrians. The drivers of the other vehicles fled the scene.

APD officers conducted an investigation and determined Corral Alvarez was driving drunk. APD’s Real Time Crime Center surveillance cameras at Central Ave. and Rio Grande Blvd. showed the vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed.

Officers are searching for the other individuals involved in the racing. Anyone with information is urged to call 505-242-COPS.
