APD Bids Farewell to Beloved Mounted Unit Horse, Nigel, After Years of Dedicated Service
ALBUQUERQUE – The Albuquerque Police Department is announcing the medical retirement of a cherished member of its Mounted Unit, Nigel, after nearly a decade of service to the Albuquerque community.
Nigel, a distinguished 12-year-old Percheron, has been a steadfast presence with the department for over nine years. His name carries special significance, honoring the memory of Officer Nigel Benner of the Rio Rancho Police Department, who tragically was killed in the line of duty in May 2015.
On April 28, Nigel embarked on a new chapter, retiring to the Let ‘R Buck Farm, an organization dedicated to working with disabled veterans. In this new role, Nigel will continue to make a positive impact on the community he has served so diligently.
"Our Mounted Unit horses hold a special place in the hearts of our community, and Nigel has been an integral part of that for nearly a decade," stated Chief Harold Medina. "He has been a true partner to our mounted officers, assisting in their duties and fostering positive relationships within Albuquerque. While we will miss his presence in the unit, we are deeply grateful for his years of service and are heartened to know he will continue to serve in such a meaningful way."
