ALBUQUERQUE – APD homicide detectives arrested Sebastian Ocana late Monday and charged him with last week’s murder of Mateo Lopez in Downtown Albuquerque.

Ocana, 20, is accused of fatally shooting Lopez, 20, on Oct. 31, 2022, in the area of 14th St. and Marquette Ave., N.W. Ocana told detectives he had been in a dispute with Lopez several months ago at Tingley Beach.

Ocana said he saw Lopez again on Oct. 31 at Tingley Beach. Ocana followed Lopez from the area in his vehicle. At some point, there was a confrontation and Ocana said he fired two rounds from his handgun into the passenger window of Lopez’s vehicle. He said Lopez fired his handgun at Ocana’s vehicle as he drove away.

Lopez crashed his vehicle a short distance away. A witness attempted life-saving measures, and rescue personnel attempted to transport Lopez, but he died before leaving the scene.

Ocana is charged with an open count of murder and tampering with evidence. He was booked overnight into the Metro Detention Center.
