Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023

ALBUQUERQUE – APD homicide detectives charged Giovanni Salazar with the murder of his father, Eddie Salazar, during a confrontation early Tuesday in Northwest Albuquerque.

Police responded shortly after 6 a.m. on Tuesday to a 911 call from Giovanni Salazar who reported he accidentally shot his father at his father’s home, located at 4215 Hillspire Ave., N.W. Giovanni Salazar told the 911 call-taker he was fighting with his father and he accidentally shot him in the hip. Officers arrived at the home and located Eddie Salazar, 74, who was deceased. Giovanni Salazar was detained for questioning.

Through further investigation, detectives determined Giovanni Salazar made the effort to retrieve his firearm and remove it from its holster to confront his father, when he could have calmed the situation. Eddie Salazar was not in close proximity of Giovanni Salazar when he was shot and Giovanni Salazar knew his acts were considered to be dangerous to the lives of others and made the choice to produce a firearm. Giovanni Salazar’s two young sons were in the home at the time of the shooting.

Giovanni Salazar admitted to using Meth and said he did not sleep for more than a day.

Giovanni Salazar was booked into the Metro Detention Center on an open count of murder and child abuse.
