APD’s Burglary Unit made the announcement for top 10 wanted burglary offenders following recent arrests of repeat offenders in the Albuquerque area.

Last month, Axel Doerr was arrested and charged by APD after being connected to a series of storage unit burglaries at multiple locations. Doerr was charged with 14 counts of non-residential burglary. 7 of the 10 individuals listed in the Top 10 have outstanding warrants for burglary and other crimes.

APD highlighted Antonio Atencio who is wanted for aggravated burglary, receiving and transferring a stolen motor vehicle and other charges following a February incident where he broke into an elderly woman’s home while armed with a deadly weapon. The vehicle used during this incident was reported stolen from a previous residential burglary. Michael Benavides was also highlighted as a top 10 wanted offender after breaking into a local restaurant in March. Benavidez stole property from inside the location and caused over a $1,000 in damage after breaking a window to enter the location.

In 2023, APD’s Criminal Investigations Bureau created the Burglary Unit to solely focus on commercial and residential burglary cases. Recently, the unit has been assigned 2 additional detectives to increase staffing levels and help with caseloads.

APD urges the community to prepare for the warmer summer months where there is typically an uptick in burglaries in the city. Below are some basic tips for homeowners and business owners:

  • Install quality camera systems and learn how to properly operate them
  • Install a security system
  • Install lighting in dark areas of the property
  • Install and maintain quality door and window locks
  • Ensure any exterior doors, including inside a garage, are properly secured before leaving
  • Secure all windows before leaving your home/business
  • If you plan to be out of town, let a trusted neighbor/friend know
  • Report suspicious activity to 242-COPS

The Albuquerque Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit offers FREE security surveys for business owners and homeowners. The security surveys offer recommendations to owners based on the environment and design of properties. Contact your local substation for more information or call 311.
