Affordable and Sustainable Housing Project Moves Forward
ALBUQUERQUE – Today, the Albuquerque Development Commission (ADC) recommended that the City Council approve a Development Agreement for the “SOMOS” affordable housing project located on Central and Alcazar in the International District.
The project is a public-private partnership between the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency (MRA) and the Greater Albuquerque Housing Partnership (GAHP) that envisions a 70-unit multi-family building with commercial elements, creating a vibrant and inclusive space for residents and businesses alike.
In July 2023, MRA issued RFP #01-2023 seeking development partners for MRA-owned land at 7200 Central Ave. SE in the Near Heights Metropolitan Redevelopment Area. GAHP responded with a proposal that advances the goals of the Near Heights Redevelopment Plan by providing affordable, quality housing units and enriching the retail environment of the International District. This project will leverage its proximity to nearby community assets such as the Talin Market, ART stations, and the new International District Library, providing low-income residents with easy access to food, transit, and learning opportunities.
“The Greater Albuquerque Housing Partnership is a local non-profit Community Housing Development Organization who has worked with the city for over 30 years to build a better Albuquerque by providing housing options that are affordable,” said Felipe Rael, Executive Director of the Greater Albuquerque Housing Partnership. “We have the staff knowledge, experience, and capacity to successfully bring this proposed development through the funding applications and construction.”

Pending City Council approval, the project could break ground as soon as 2025, and is expected to be complete about one-and-a-half years later.
