Happy fall, Albuquerque!
September is winding down, and you know what that means: Balloon Fiesta time. As if these Southwest skies weren’t stunning enough already, they’re about to be filled with floating art. I can’t wait. Just in time for this year’s revelry, APD’s mounted unit is back in action. These horses – including Scotty, the newest member – are being specially trained to keep Fiesta safe and fun. Be sure to pack a carrot in case you see them at Balloon Fiesta Park.
Adding to this season of celebration, we kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with a great party on Civic Plaza. From now through October 15 there’s a full roster of ways to herald the history and contributions of Hispanic people and culture citywide. Our Office of Equity and Inclusion invites everyone check out the calendar of events and join in the festivities.
You may have noticed exciting progress on the Rail Trail. Its new gateway arches, which just like the trail were designed by world-renowned Albuquerque architect Antoine Predock, are now in place and looking incredible in the Sawmill District. Go have a look, and years from now you’ll be able to say you saw these iconic landmarks way back when.
A big congratulations to the latest One ABQ and Volunteer of the Month award winners: Chantelle Martinez of Blessed and Beautiful for her work supporting victims of violence and poverty, Sunport Ambassador Jolynn Maestas for her community service, and Amber Logan for her lifesaving actions during a medical emergency – with a special commendation to APD Officer Matthew Fisher for stepping in to help. These folks truly embody what it means to be “One Albuquerque.”
And if you’re flying soon, stop by the high-ranking Sunport’s new food hall, now officially open. With seven great dining options, including the first-ever Native cuisine restaurant in an airport (and among the few anywhere), it’s a perfect way to get a real taste of what this fantastic region is all about.
Best of the Fiesta to you,
Mayor Tim Keller
