What are you giving thanks for this year, Albuquerque?

Besides red chile turkey gravy, what I feel most grateful for right now is the remarkable progress we’ve made in curbing some of our City’s most persistent issues. Annual stats are rolling in from our departments and programs, and it’s safe to say our strategies are working. For starters, Albuquerque is beating national trends with big drops in crime and a boost in enforcement. Every major category is down compared to last year: Aggravated assaults by 13%, robberies 22%, shootings 39%, and homicides 32%. Property crime is also continuing to fall, with burglary and break-ins down 13%, vandalism 25%, and car theft a whole 40%.

Speaking of stopping trouble before it starts, Albuquerque Community Safety (ACS) has expanded its School-Based Violence Intervention Program (SBVIP) to Del Norte High School, the fourth APS school to provide this mentorship and meaningful support for students impacted by trauma and at risk of heading down a tough path. Since launching in 2022, SBVIP has delivered phenomenal results: 83% of eligible seniors graduated last year, and students earned higher GPAs, reduced suspensions, and an 84% overall reduction in offenses like fighting and other disruptions.

Finally, for the first time in more than half a century, we’ve succeeded in overhauling Albuquerque’s traffic code, modernizing laws to better protect pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users  as well as drivers. We’re also making safety upgrades to Broadway and have started construction on a critical new HAWK signal on Carlisle at the Paseo del Nordeste trail to minimize risk. Shout out to our Vision Zero team, who are working with a variety of City and community partners to eliminate all traffic fatalities.

We are proving what targeted approaches, effective collaboration and basic compassion can achieve. I couldn’t be more thankful for this positive momentum and for everything you all do to help make Albuquerque better every day.

Let’s keep at it,

Mayor Tim Keller
