Spring is wrapping up with plenty to celebrate, Albuquerque,

May brought new life to neighborhoods, parks, and public spaces across our city. From exciting additions at the BioPark to affordable housing and community events, Albuquerque continues to grow in ways that bring people together and make our city even more vibrant.

Downtown has transformed this month with the arrival of towering alebrijes and nahuales, colorful sculptures inspired by Mexican folk art and magical realism. Paired with exciting new additions at the ABQ BioPark Zoo, including African animals and a new giraffe calf, these experiences are creating fresh opportunities for families and visitors to explore, learn, and celebrate culture and wildlife right here in Albuquerque. Run for the Zoo also returned this month, bringing thousands together in support of conservation, education, and one of our city’s most beloved amenities.

We also continued investing in housing and transportation across Albuquerque. We celebrated the opening of Garfield Townhomes, turning a once-vacant lot near UNM into new energy-efficient housing for residents. At the same time, the next phase of ABQ RIDE Forward officially launched, expanding transit options and improving service for riders across the city, including new connections in the South Valley.

This month also reminded us of the importance of service and community care. At the New Mexico Veterans Memorial Park, residents gathered for Memorial Day to honor the lives and sacrifices of those who served our country. On Civic Plaza, city leaders and law enforcement agencies came together for the annual Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony, recognizing the officers who gave their lives in the line of duty and honoring the lasting impact they leave on our community.

This summer, the City is proud nearly 1,000 local teens for jobs and internship opportunities across departments and community programs, helping young people gain valuable experience while supporting neighborhoods citywide. And a year later, our Guaranteed Basic Income program is showing promising results for local families and young people. Participants are building savings, improving food security, and creating more stability for their futures, showing the impact direct support can have when we invest in our community.

We also celebrated the spirit of giving back at this year’s Mayor’s Ball, which raised support for the One Albuquerque Fund while welcoming families from across the city for a day of music, activities, and community connection. Events like these reflect the generosity and togetherness that continue to define Albuquerque.

From public art to public transit, from honoring traditions to investing in the future, May has shown the many ways Albuquerque continues moving forward together.
